The shift can be almost invisible. Turnout gets shorter, grass growth slows and hay takes over the feeding program. Your horse may keep the same weight and appetite, but the vitamin E in the ration can change dramatically.

Fresh green grass is the horse’s richest natural source of vitamin E. Once forage is cut, dried, baled and stored, levels decline. That leaves many hay-fed horses relying on fortified feeds or supplements to meet their needs.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes and supports normal muscle, nerve and immune function. Horses cannot manufacture it themselves. Performance horses, seniors, growing horses and broodmares may have greater demands, although limited pasture is the most common reason intake falls short.

1. Why Hay Changes the Picture

Pasture vitamin E varies with plant maturity, grass quality, turnout and intake. Productive pasture may provide about 45 to 400 IU per kilogram of dry matter. Stored hay may contain only 4.5 to 40 IU per kilogram.
For a 500-kilogram horse eating 10 kilograms of forage dry matter, that difference could mean roughly 450 to 4,000 IU from pasture, compared with about 45 to 400 IU from hay. The ranges are broad, but the message is simple: a full hay net does not guarantee adequate vitamin E.

2. How Much Does a Horse Need?

A mature horse at maintenance commonly needs at least 1 IU per kilogram of body weight each day. A practical target is often closer to 2 IU per kilogram. For a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) horse, that is about 500 to 1,000 IU daily.

Regular or heavy exercise can raise the target to approximately 1,000 to 2,000 IU. Growing horses, breeding animals and seniors also deserve a closer review. These are total-diet targets, not automatic supplement doses; vitamin E from pasture, fortified feed, balancers, oils and existing supplements all counts.

Poor recovery, recurring muscle soreness, weakness, muscle loss or changes in coordination can occur with low vitamin E status, but none is diagnostic. Sudden weakness, collapse, severe pain, difficulty rising or worsening coordination requires prompt veterinary attention. Bloodwork is most useful when a veterinarian interprets it alongside clinical signs, diet history and selenium intake.

3. Read Beyond the IU Number

Natural vitamin E appears on labels as d-alpha-tocopherol or d-alpha-tocopheryl acetate. Synthetic forms use the “dl” prefix. Natural vitamin E contains the RRR form the body preferentially recognizes and retains; synthetic vitamin E contains eight isomers. Both provide vitamin activity, but natural vitamin E is generally the preferred targeted source.

Concentration matters, too. Mad Barn Natural Vitamin E provides 1,000 IU in a 1.67-gram serving, or 600 IU per gram. When vitamin E is the only gap

When selenium is also needed

Because selenium has a narrower margin between adequate and excessive intake, fortified feeds, balancers and other supplements must be counted first. Geography can suggest low-selenium forage, but it cannot establish the correct dose.
