Horse lovers in Hong Kong are about to get a real treat during the inaugural Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show, when the Shetland Grand National takes centre stage.
In case you’re not familiar with it, the Shetland Pony Grand National is a team of Shetland ponies and young jockeys that race all over the United Kingdom raising money for charity. The team is comprised of children between the ages of 8-14 who must be under 5’ tall, and the ponies must be registered with the Shetland Pony Stud Book. There are two heats and a final with the entire spectacle lasting around 30 minutes. (Check out their YouTube channel here.)
The horse show in Hong Kong is set to take place February 14-16 and is being run by HPower Group, the same organizers who put on the London International and Royal Windsor Horse Shows. “The team wanted to bring a touch of London to Hong Kong and also provide them with a ‘never before seen’ experience,” a spokesperson for HPower told Horse & Hound.
“Knowing that horse racing is very popular in Hong Kong, it was felt that the perfect fit for the show would be to take some riders from the Shetland Pony Grand National out to Hong Kong. Some of the riders that were seen in the finals at London International will be making the trip eastwards in February. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of the partners for the new Hong Kong show and the excitement is already mounting.”
We will definitely follow along on the group’s Instagram account to watch the event unfold!
