Global superstar Britney Spears has revealed she works with horses to help her mental health. In an Instagram post in January, Spears wrote “I do equine therapy every Tuesday and Saturday because I’ve been so traumatized by people…” There are two images, one of a random man (whom Spears doesn’t know but says she likes the looks of) and a close-up of a horse’s face.
The 43-year-old singer and dancer is referring to the trauma caused by the 13-year conservatorship under her father Jamie Spears, which was kicked to the curb by the courts in 2021.
During the early aughts the troubled star displayed behaviour that worried her family, friends and fans which brought the conservatorship into being in 2008. But after more than a decade under her father’s thumb where the singer appeared depressed and “trapped”, a movement to “free Britney” took hold and included multiple documentaries such as Framing Britney Spears and Britney Vs. Spears that helped lead to the court overturning the conservatorship.
And as we’ve reported many times in Horse-Canada, equine-assisted therapy, known by the acronym EAT, has become widely accepted as a treatment for those suffering from a host of mental issues, from PTSD to depression and many other disorders.
An unidentified source explained to Life & Style magazine that while Britney does love riding – we wrote about her beach ride post-break up here – that is not part of the therapy. “It’s more about being with the horses and a therapist because it’s more about just being with the horses, feeding them, watering them, grooming them, it’s about being in their calming presence and also working with a therapist at the same time.”
According to the source, Spears is so taken with the results of her equine therapy she is considering adopting or buying her own horse, and possible a ranch to keep multiple horses near her. “Britney is doing all kinds of therapy… [but] working with the horses has given her the most peace.”
As devoted horse lovers, we can all relate to that.
