Despite his simple moniker, Mike is not your average off-the-track Thoroughbred. The full-brother of Pender Harbour, who was named after Gardiner Farm’s Dr. Mike Colterjohn, is an excellent ambassador for the breed and a true testament to the versatility so many people love about Thoroughbreds.
In this Canadian Thoroughbred article, we learn about how Mike raised money and awareness for other off-the-track Thoroughbreds through the “I Like Mike” campaign. Mike’s new owner, Jim Phillips, came up with the idea as he was preparing Mike for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover in 2018. He asked the public to donate money to the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society in the lead up to the event, and promised to match the funds with his own money.
In the article, Phillips talks about being grateful for the chance to work with Mike, and acknowledges how special he is. He also recalls his experience at the Makeover challenge and reveals how much money was raising for LongRun.
