In this Canadian Thoroughbred article, Jennifer Morrison discusses the contenders, and her picks, for the 2018 year-end awards – the Canadian Sovereign Awards and the American Eclipse Awards.
Will the 2018 Eclipse Horse of the Year be the undefeated Triple Crown winner, Justify, or the gritty five year old Accelerate who also had a stellar season, winning six of seven starts.
The Sovereign Awards, for Canada’s best, almost always go to Ontario horses or people. Mostly because there are more horses racing at Woodbine including those that ship up from the U.S. However, in 2018, there are two western Canadian based horses who are in contention for the award. There is the Manitoba bred and raced Escape Clause and the three year old Sky Promise who should be given serious consideration.
Jennifer shares her choices for the following Sovereign Award divisions: Two Year Old Colt, Two Year Old Filly, Three Year Old Colt, Three Year Old Filly, Older Male, Older Female, Male Sprinter, Female Sprinter, Male Turf, Female Turf, Horse of the Year, Broodmare, Owner, Breeder, Trainer, Jockey and Apprentice Jockey.
