Ray Paulick, an expert in the Thoroughbred industry, points to the demise of greyhound racing as a cautionary tale for the horse racing industry.
In this Canadian Thoroughbred article, Paulick explains that 41 out of 50 States have voted to make dog racing illegal, with Florida being the latest to do so. By January 2021, it will be illegal to race dogs in Florida, which is home to 11 out of 17 dog racing tracks in the United States. This effectively will put the sport out of business, he says.
Those opposed to the Florida ruling, including the Tampa Bay Downs racetrack and over 90 greyhound adoption agencies, as well as the Florida Association of Kennel Clubs, the National Rifle Association, the Florida Cattleman’s Association and the Florida Farm Bureau, are worried that a clause in the amendment – which states: “The humane treatment of animals is a fundamental value of the people of the State of Florida” – could jeopardize their livelihoods. Paulick says horse people should be concerned too.
