Whoops, he did it again … Canadian horseman Tik Maynard has won the 2025 Road to the Horse, the world championship for starting young horses. This is Maynard’s second victory, having been crowned champion in 2024. Maynard bested three other competitors in the final on Goodluck Suncat, the unbacked Quarter Horse he chose for the competition. For his hard work, Maynard won a Circle Y saddle, western belt buckle and $75,000 USD ($105,000 CDN).
Maynard, a CCI4* eventer and short-listed rider for the Canadian Three-Day Event Team, runs Copperline Equestrian out of Ocala, Florida.
“It’s such a surreal moment in someone’s life, I spent over three hours in a sequestered room where I can’t see what’s going on, I don’t know what’s happening or what other people are doing, and I’m too nervous to read or to eat or to drink,” Maynard explains backstage after his stunning second victory. “And then you get out there and I really just tried to come back to myself and do what the horse tells me to do.”
Maynard admitted that the round pen work and the rail work went really well, but it was a little more challenging when it came to the obstacles and choosing how to approach them and they must be tackled in order.
“I had to be aware of myself and when to pick the moments to push and when to back off and remember that this horse has a long future ahead of him and it’s not about today… it’s an emotional rollercoaster,” he adds.
Maynard has built on the work he did last year with BC cowboy Glenn Stewart and other cowboys who gave him advice and coaching.
The Road to the Horse was created by Steven and Tootie Bland, who believed that by creating a partnership built on trust you can change a horse’s life and a horse can change your life. To make that a reality, the main goal of the event is to find the top colt starter, who is judged on his or her effectiveness of horsemanship methodology to communicate, educate and build a partnership with their colt based on trust. The highest scoring trainer is crowned world champion.
