A German musician and DJ has taken the concept of being a ‘horsegirl’ farther than most. Meet Stella Stallion, a.k.a “Horsegiirl”, a woman who identifies as half-horse, half-human, both on stage and in real life.
According to a recent article in People, “Horsegiirl” first entered the spotlight in 2022 with such hits songs as “My Barn My Rules” (below) and “materiaL hor$e.”
Stallion conceals her human face behind an almost cartoonish horse mask and makeup complete with muzzle and ears and a heart-shaped star between her eyes. Her appearances at awards shows such as the Brit Awards confused fellow guests and fans watching online.
Her first EP is titled V.I.P for “very important pony” and she’s on the slate for this year’s Coachella. But what exactly is up with the whole horsey gimmick?
She tells People she grew up on a farm surrounded by animals and has always been drawn to music, adding she was discovered “by a really, really famous horse, also a singer, Whitney Horseton. Ever since then I’ve been galloping around stages, and three years ago I made the crossover into the human music space a little bit more.”
The Q&A with Horsegiirl makes for an interesting read and we’re pretty sure there’s some serious satire or performance art going on here, but the artist made a good point on the historic relationship between horses and humankind.
“If anything, humanity — they might not even know it — but you guys went through a breakup with horses unknowingly when you invented cars, because we were a huge part of human culture for thousands of years,” she tells People. “We were best friends pretty much, really leaning onto each other, and only in the last 150 years we have disappeared more and more. But I think there is still a huge tie or almost that huge wish to maybe reconnect a little bit. So I completely understand why in popular culture horses have not disappeared and in fact are being mentioned all the time. And I don’t mind if anyone wants to sing about us. I’m grateful.”
