It’s back to patrolling the streets of London for another one of the five horses who escaped  in the British capital last April and ran wild, startling motorists and pedestrians alike.

The stunning grey gelding known as Vida was seen in video with blood streaming down his neck and chest as he and another horse, a black gelding named Quaker, galloped through traffic. According to reports, the horses were startled by a construction crew and bolted. In one of the media reports at the time, a taxi driver had his car windows smashed when one of the horses collided with his cab as he waiting outside a hotel near Buckingham Palace.

Three of the five horses sustained injuries during the escape and all five horses – the other three are Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish – were shipped to the equine charity Horse Trust, where they received care.  Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish have already taken up their duties back in London and now, five months later, it was time for Vida to return to duty.

“It’s been our honour to give Vida a place of respite and recovery,” said Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen in a statement. “Vida has come to hold a particular place in our hearts, he’s been a joy to care for, partly as we don’t have to groom that muddy monster for parade.”

Nicola Housby Skeggs, veterinary director, tells the BBC that “Seeing Vida go home is bittersweet. He has been an absolute superstar, winning the groom’s hearts – and treats. We are so pleased to see him make such a fantastic recovery.”

She also added that, “While he will be missed here, as a relative youngster, he is certainly now ready for some exercise.” (You can watch a video of Vida on his way home here.)

Quaker is still at Horse Trust recovering from his injuries; we’ll post an update on him when it becomes available.
