Durham Regional Police reported that a six-month-old weanling died of unknown causes following a break-in at a barn near Sunderland, ON, sometime between 11:30 pm on Saturday, Nov. 5th and 11 am on Sunday, Nov. 6th, on Concession Road 5 west of Highway 7 in Brock Township.
It appears an unknown suspect (or suspects) entered the rural property by breaking through a wired gate, a padlock, and a locked door to access the barn, which allowed two six-month-old foals to escape. The farm owners found one of the foals dead in heavy brush, with its companion remaining beside it. Sgt. Bill Calder of the DRP media relations department suggested the foal may have died of a “heart attack,” although no cause of death has been released and it is not clear if a necropsy is planned.
The area has seen an increase in break-ins on rural properties, especially barns and garages which may contain tools and machinery. The horse’s owners were not identified and calls to Durham Police to obtain more information were not returned.
