What’s cuter than a newborn foal? Four newborn foals! And that’s exactly what zookeepers and zoo visitors got with the arrival of four Przewalski’s babies at the Marwell Zoo in England.
According to the zoo’s press release, all four foals are fillies and are doing well.
The first foal was born on May 3 and named Xaela, which means ‘mystical’ or ‘fierce’ in Mongolian. The second foal, born May 11, is named Shara, a mountain in Mongolia.
Then came Bilüü on June 12, and Ereen on June 13. The names come from cities in Mongolia.
“All of the foals are doing well and can often be seen laying or sunbathing in the valley field close by the rest of the herd,” said Marwell zookeeper Erin Luter. “Thanks to breeding programmes like ours at Marwell they can now be found in reintroduction sites in Mongolia and China and have been downlisted to Endangered.’
Indeed, last month seven of the equines were reintroduced in Kazakhstan after a 200-year absence.
