Down under in the land of Oz, a big bay horse named Gentle George is a hero. According to his owner, George protected a little joey ‒ a baby kangaroo ‒ after it was separated from its mother and mauled by a fox.

George’s owner discovered the little marsupial after he went to investigate why the bay horse wasn’t joining the rest of his herd, and instead was standing guard over something. The something was the female joey, who was severely injured.

The Bridgetown Wildlife Rescue near Perth came and picked up the wee thing and found she had gashes on her neck, two tears across her ear and an extremely swollen jaw. Bridgetown founder Shane Williams told Yahoo News that it was luck the baby survived and that George was an “unusual horse” for behaving as he did.

Williams took the tiny roo, now called Judy, to the rescue where two weeks on she is recovering nicely from her wounds. “She puts her hands up to be picked up, she’s a beautiful girl. I find when joeys have been harmed and know their mum is no longer around, they’re very loving. They’re very intelligent animals, and so innocent,” Williams told Yahoo.
