Fans of western riding and the history of rodeo in Canada will want to get their hands on a copy of a new book that celebrates one of our country’s most storied events: The Calgary Stampede.
S is for STAMPEDE, written and published by Jenn Webster, uses the alphabet to explore the events, people, animals, and history of the Stampede. One example is “F is for Fireworks & Flores LaDue”, known as the First Lady of the Stampede and the only woman to hold three world championships for trick and fancy roping. LaDue famously could ride five horses at a time, and given her “firecracker” personality, the author chose to pair her with the event’s iconic fireworks display that closes each night.
Other subjects include “E is for Elbow River Camp,” and “P is for Parade,” and of course, the Stampede’s founders, legendary rodeo stock, and the one-of-a-kind experience visitors glean from the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”
Webster, who is also the publisher of the Western Horse Review, worked with local Alberta artist Karen Coe who “grew up on the back of a horse,” and illustrated the alphabet across the 40 pages. Coe’s work has been featured in the Calgary Stampede Art Auction on multiple occasions.
