The former owner of Whisper Ridge Ranch near Peterborough, Ontario, who was under investigation by the Ontario SPCA in 2016 on suspicion of animal cruelty and neglect, is back in the headlines.
Sandra Reed-Buyers (formerly Sandra Reed) escaped charges in 2016, but was recently hit with with 33 counts of animal cruelty related to a current investigation, which began in April. Reports indicate that Reed-Buyers was ordered by the OSPCA to improve the living conditions of the animals in her care to meet the standards required by law. On May 30th, when it was determined Reed-Buyers had failed to do so, the OSPCA seized one horse, a goat, three dogs and 22 sheep that were emaciated. The animals are now in the care of the Peterborough Humane Society.
Jo Denley of Douro, Ontario, co-owed the sheep with Reed-Buyers, and also owned two dogs on the property. Denley says she went into business with Reed-Buyers in August last year, unaware of her previous OSPCA investigation.
Denley reported Reed-Buyers to the OSPCA and OPP after Reed-Byers banned her from the property and refused to return her animals in November, when Denley attempted to end their business relationship.
Reed-Buyers is slated to appear in court on August 16th.
