The first case of EHV-1-neurological (EHM) occurred at a boarding facility in the Municipality of Kawartha Lakes northeast of Toronto. The horse, a 17-year-old gelding, began showing clinical signs on March 24th including ataxia and nasal discharge. The affected horse had been vaccinated and is recovering while isolated; the facility owner has instituted enhanced biosecurity procedures and animal movement restrictions. No other horses on the property have shown clinical signs.
The second case was reported at a boarding facility in Wellington County west of Toronto where a 19-year-old pony gelding presented with ataxia and difficulty urinating on March 24th. The affected pony is being treated at a referral hospital. None of the 7 other exposed horses on the property are showing clinical signs and the facility manager has instituted biosecurity protocols and animal movement restrictions.
