A police horse is recovering after being hit by a stolen pickup truck in downtown Toronto last Friday.
As seen on a viral video taken on November 1, the pickup attempts to escape a mounted unit and in doing so hits one of the horses, several cars, and narrowly misses pedestrians before eventually crashing into a storefront. It looks like a scene from a movie as uniformed officers are seen chasing one of the thieves. One suspect was arrested at the scene and police arrested the second suspect a short distance away. Both occupants of the stolen vehicle have been charged with various offences including injuring an animal.
Fortunately, no one, including York, a four-year-old Clydesdale, suffered major injuries, although one officer was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. York has only been on the job for one year with the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
During the attempt to stop the stolen pickup, York was struck in the chest and leg. According to a police spokesperson, although he had no visible injuries at the time, he was transported to the Ontario Veterinary Hospital as a precautionary measure to ensure that there were no internal injuries. After a thorough examination York was given a clean bill of health and is back at the TPS stables and is recovering; his rider was not injured.
The two suspects, a man and a woman who were of no fixed address and were already out on bail, are behind bars (again). Let’s hope they stay there.
