A boarding stable near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is under voluntary quarantine following a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV-1).
According to the mare’s owner, Alyssa Gartner, the five-year-old Quarter Horse, Sunny, showed signs of instability – dragging her feet, having wobbly legs. After examination by a veterinarian, Sunny was diagnosed with EHV-1, placed in isolation and started on supportive therapy.
EHV-1 can cause respiratory diseases, abortion and neurologic disease. It typically presents with fever, and sometimes coughing, nasal discharge, as well as weakness and respiratory distress. Learn more here.
