One adorable and very senior donkey in Moose Jaw is being denied his place in the history books, or at least the Guinness Book of World Records. Bugsy, who has been living out his golden years at the Free To Be Me Animal Sanctuary, is now 55 years young. That’s got to be a record, right?

Technically it is. But not when official documents go missing, and that appears to be the case here. “We actually looked into putting him into the Guinness Book of World Records,” Louanne Shropshire, owner of Free To Be Me Animal Sanctuary  told Moose Jaw Today.  “We looked into it, and the oldest donkey they had registered was (54) years old.”

According to the Guinness World Records, that record holder was a donkey named Suzy, who was 54 when she passed away in 2002 in New Mexico, USA. She was bought as a yearling in 1949 and lived and worked on a ranch until 1968, before her last owners bought her.

Shropshire says that Bugsy arrived at her sanctuary at 35, but his original owners moved several times and apparently threw away his documentation. But nonetheless, he is still a very special donkey. And if you’re near Moose Jaw you can call Free to be Me and visit him and the other animals.
