A Shetland Island local got a surprise when driving across the island in July. Janice Priest of Unst came across the unexpected sight of a lone man playing the bagpipes to an audience of captivated Shetland ponies.
“As I went past I realized that there was this man with a set of bagpipes playing and the mares in the scattald (hill) were all standing beside him listening,” she told Talker News.
Priest has a Shetland pony breeding farm of her own, Musselbrough Shetland Pony Stud, so she understood how unusual and special this was.
She stopped to take the video, which has since gone viral. She also told the news outlet that later in the day she found out that the piper was actually a Swiss national named Jacques Ioset (“Unst is to peerie a place tae try an hoid!” posted Janice on Facebook) and asked him about his unusual concert. “He said the mares had been a bit away when he started but they all crowded round.”
Not everyone is a fan of bagpipes – and there are plenty of funny quotes about them – but these little equines found them quite enchanting.
