TIZ THE EARLY QUEEN’S PLATE FAVOURITE

and his girl cousin is also in the top 10

Chiefswood Stable, owned by Mark and Robert Krembil, won its first and only Queen’s Plate in 2004 with its wonderful NIIGON, who started a super stallion career before his sudden death a few years later. Niigon was the 3rd favourite in the mythical Queen’s Plate winterbook early in 2004, 10 to 1 behind A Bit O Gold and Six Sexy Sisters.

13 years later and Chiefswood, coming off one of its best racing seasons since Niigon  has the Plate favourite, a homebred son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, Tiz a Slam (78, 85, 73 65 his four Beyer Figureds as a 2yo)

The handsome bay colt, trained by none other than Roger Attfield, was predictably installed this year’s early choice following his 3 wins in 4 races last season. Woodbine and Daily Racing Form calculated odds on 91 eligible 3-year-olds, all making the first payment for the Canadian Triple Crown..

Chiefswood has a litany of 3-year-olds eligible for the Triple Crown but one that is closely related to TIZ A SLAM, his cousin ELLAN VANNIN (68.66), is not owned by Cheifswood. Ellan Vannin, winner of both of her races as a juvenile including a stakes race, is form the mare Vulcan Riose, a half sister to Flaming Rose, the dam of Tiz a Slam. Vulcan Rose was sold for $20,000 by Chiefswood in 2012 at Keeneland and Deb and Barry Holmes of BC bought the mare and bred her to Spring at Last.

Ellan Vannin was unsold at the CTHS yearling sale 2 years and was residing at Gail Wood’s farm before Jon Lee purchased her privately for $20,000. Tony Gattelero trains.

Attfield, who is prepping Bob Harvey’s nice colt ESCONDERA (68, 63 , 66) for the Canadian series.

Trainer Mike DePaulo has many eligibles as well.

Tiz a Slam edges King and His Court (69, 72, 74 last 3 beyer Figures) as Plate fave as the latter, now owned by Gary Barber, won a slow edition of Coronation Futurity, often the race that installs the Plate favourite, Also, King and His Court was last in his season debut on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs recently.

His stablemate State of Honor (91 Beyer at Tampa), a better 3rd in the Tampa Bay race (Sam F Davis) has been made 3rd favourite and would it not be for the hint that longer distances may not be his thing, this giant colt would probably be the Plate favourite.

The top 5 contenders on the Woodbine release are similar to the top 5 on Thoroughblog.

Sam-Son Frms’ eligible Tidal Dancer and Clutch Catch are on Thoroughblog’s top 10 while another promising colt from its barn, Malibu Secret (working at Fair Hill and Tampa Bay recently) is on the Woodbine list,

Fast American based filly Stallion Heiress has made the list also.

HASTINGS PARK TO START LATER
Opening Day at Hastings Now Sunday, April 23
Incentive Programs Increase Horse Population

Vancouver, B.C. (Feb. 21/17) – Opening day to the start of the 2017 Hastings Racecourse thoroughbred season has been pushed back one week to Sunday, April 23 and General Manager Darren MacDonald sees the adjustment as one of many positive developments on the horizon.
“The unpleasant weather we experienced at the start of February resulted in the majority of horses being behind in their pre-season preparations,” MacDonald said. “We will add races later in the meet to make up for the cancellation of opening day. It’s looking like we are on the way to seeing the highest horse population numbers in many years with stall applications currently in the 650 range. The new incentive programs have been well received and that bodes well for a very promising season.”
Ole Nielsen, President of the BC Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (BCTOBA), says the various incentive programs are all over-subscribed and he sees renewed enthusiasm among breeders and owners.
“Our horse population is up to the point where there are more horses than ever in recent years,” Nielsen said. “In addition, we have 47 new mares, weanlings and yearlings in our province as a result of our fall and winter incentives. It’s unfortunate the bad weather worked against us earlier this month and delayed things, but we’ll make up for it. Everyone is excited.”
Nielsen speaks with authority after having been involved in thoroughbred racing since 1970 as owner of Canmor Farms in Aldergrove and serving as a past president and director of several industry organizations.
Another change on the 2017 Hastings Racecourse schedule entails moving the original race date of Monday, September 4 to Wednesday, September 6 in order to accommodate parking concerns expressed by officials of The Fair at the PNE on its traditional Labour Day closing date. “We’re planning a ‘throwback’ theme relating to the 1990’s when Wednesday night racing was a regular happening,” MacDonald says. “The card will start at 7:00 p.m. and the evening will feature prices from the 90’s when things were a lot less expensive than they are today.”
AT THE WIRE: The Hastings Paddock Sale featuring two-year-olds in training and horses of racing age will be held on Sunday, April 30 instead of April 2. The sale will commence 15 minutes after the last race on the Sunday afternoon card (Apr. 30) with the preview set for Saturday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m. following training at Hastings. “We want to give consignors extra time to get their horses ready and put forth fit product for the sale,” MacDonald said.
Hastings Racing Secretary Nichelle Milner is pleased with the amount of horses in training following the unpleasant weather delay. “There has been a lot interest expressed by owners in Alberta,” Milner said. “I’m seeing a steady influx of horses returning to the track for training and because we have some of the best trainers in the industry, I can safely say that they will be ready for opening day.”
Training at Hastings is taking place seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 11 a.m.
