Ontario-breds in Monday’s HORA Sale in Lexington, Tuesday’s July Yearling Sale from Fasig Tipton

QUEEN’S PLATE starter MOON SWINGS is up for sale in Kentucky today at the Fasig Tipton Juky Horses of Racing Age Sale. Moon Swings, a 3-year-old by Malibu Moon, was one of many huge longshots in this year’s Plate (won by One Bad Boy) and he finished 13th beaten more than 20 lengths. A maiden raced by Zilli Racing, Moon Swings is one of half a dozen Ontario breds in today’s sale:

IVAN DALOS has consigned several of the Ontario-breds listed including a filly from the first crop of AMI’S HOLIDAY, a Grade 3 stakes winning son of Harlan’s Holiday who stands for Dalos at Coklebrook Farms.

The filly is out of the Empire Maker mare Hatmaker and she is getting some interest at the sale.

 

 

TWO-YEAR-OLDS WOW AT WOODBINE

The youngsters took the stage this weekend at Woodbine with the My Dear and Victoria Stakes for 2-year-olds, both open races.

American invader FAST SCENE, who won her maiden at Woodbine for trainer Tim Hamm and owners Three Chimneys Farm and Blazing Meadows Farm. She is a daughter of first crop sire FAST ANNA and she went her 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.15. Her Beyer Figure was 71.

Sunday, Bill Werner’s exciting colt MR. HUSTLE, trained by Roger Attfield, made easy work of a small group in the Victoria at 5 1/2 furlongs and he went in 1:04.60. The Declaration of War colt is also 2 for 2 in his career like Fast Scene.

Rafael Hernandez rode both winners.

And then there was ‘Casey’, now known as KEEP ON TRUCKIN(Society’s Chairman – Colbra)  who started a buzz with a debut win by 11 3/4 lengths on Sunday for George Ledson, Brian Ledson and Anderson Farms. The chunky chestnut, bought for $110,000 at the CTHS Ontario yearling sale last August, was bet heavily and won easily in 58.38.

Bred by Tim Meeuse and Arika Everatt-Meeuse, ‘Casey’ is from a dam, Colbra, named for Everatt-Meeuse’s children, was a weanling purchase meant to be re-sold but she did not make a sale as a yearling and then suffered an injury in a sizzling workout for a 2-year-old in 2012. Everatt-Meeuse decided to try and breed the mare and her first foal is winner Colby Ol’ Fashion (ON). The Society’s Chairman colt, nicknamed Casey, was “one of the nicest horses I have ever been around”, said Everatt-Meeuse.

WAKE UP MAGGIE, also an Ontario sired youngster, won her second career start on Saturday for Jessie Ladouceur. The Silent Name filly was a $10,000 yearling purchase at the Canadian premier’s yearling sale a year ago by Big Rock Racing.

Bred by Andy Stronach, Wake Up Maggie posted a 60 Beyer Figure in the win.

92 WHERE’S THE WIDGET (Giant Gizmo) – Classy old timer came to life on Friday when dropped in for $19,000 claiming by Mike Sisk and trained Norm McKnight.

DENYSE MCCLACHRIE won her first race of the season when AM PREPARED won his maiden for $15,00 claiming on Friday.

Ontario-bred and Ontario-sired horses are cleaning up at Woodbine at all levels. Lower maiden claiming types are winning with 47 beyer Figures and collecting $18,000 for the victory from pursed and bonuses.

88 I’M CORFU invaded for owner and trainer WAYNE RICE and won an allowance race at 5 furlongs in 57.91 for that big Beyer Figure. The 4yo did not wear shoes.

81 CANMORE battled on the lead and then pulled away to win on the inner grass for $40,000 claiming. Chiefswood Stable owners and bred the Ghostzapper gelding who is trained by Mike DePaulo. DePaulo won 6 races last week.

81 earned  by HOT RODIN at Assiniboia Downs on Saturday. California-bred gelding is by Heat Shield and won the $7,500 claiming race by 7 lengths for trainer Juan Silva.

As mid-season approaches, form reversals are starting to become the norm.

Race 1 at Woodbine on Sunday was by CARMENOOTZ who had been beaten 40 lengths in his three races this year. The Mary Biamonte C. DeMizio gelding won handily for $25,000 claiming in a turn around in form.

Trainer Elizabeth Elder won her first race of the season when SPIRIT OF YORK came from last place to win a maiden allowance/optional claiming race on the main turf at 9 furlongs. The E P Taylor turf, which has been producing insanely fast times, has also been playing better for strtech runner.

ENCORE RACING CLUB won their first race as a group when LADY OXBOW won the grass on Saturday. And the in-form ARTISTICO won a $60,00 claiming race for his fourth win in his last 9 races for 4U Thoroughbred Racing Stable and trainer Sylvain Pion.

 

ENABLE IMPRESSES IN 2019 OPENER; TOO DARN HOT ROLLS

Overseas, the performances have been magical

As Enable trains up to the July 27 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1), jockey Frankie Dettori will have some peace of mind about the rest of what’s likely to be the 5-year-old’s final season.

“She showed that she’s still as good as she was last year,” Dettori said Sunday in an interview with British broadcaster At The Races.

Enable returned a winner of Sandown’s Coral Eclipse (G1) on Saturday at 1 1/4 miles, a bit shorter than her preferred 12-furlong trip. But for all of it, she was still 3/4 of a lengths better than Magical, with the same margin separating them in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“It’s great,” Dettori told At The Races of Enable. “She’s back to her normal self, and that’s the way I like her. She’s a strong traveler and a stayer, and she’s got a kick — everything.”
