MEL LAWSON INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
News comes down quietly on Monday about inductees
Mel Lawson of Hamilton, the 87-year-old owner of Jim Dandy Stables, will be inducted in the builders’ category of the Canadian Horse racing Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Aug. 19.
Lawson has raced the likes of Eternal Search and Let’s Go Blue and has a serious contender for this year’s Queen’s Plate in Ghost Fleet, a descendant of Eternal Search.
Also inducted is British Columbia based jockey/trainer FRANK BARROBY.
Horses inducted include VICTORY GALLOP, the Canadian bred Belmont Stakes winner who was bred by Ivan Dalos and foaled at Darrowby Farm in Loretto.
LADY ANGELA, who has a stakes race named for her that will be run this weekend, was inducted. She is the dam of NEARCTIC among others.
In the veterans category, VICTORIAN ERA beat out Horse of the Year PLAY THE KING. Victoria Era won 18 stakes races for trainer Lou Cavalaris.
The offical press release is expected to be available today.

New York horse racing threatened by money woes, may shut down after Belmont

NEW YORK — The New York Racing Association is running out of money and might have to shut down in less than three weeks, the day after the Belmont Stakes.
One leading horseman described the situation as “catastrophic” and said that even Saratoga, the jewel of New York racing, could be threatened.
NYRA president and CEO Charlie Hayward said Monday that cash problems must be resolved “to make it through the entire Belmont Park race meet.”
He did not give a timetable for a possible closing, but several horsemen said racing could be halted June6 — a day after the final leg of the Triple Crown.

PARAGALLO SENTENCING THIS MORNING
Paragallo to be sentenced in horse abuse case

GREENE COUNTY — A once prominent horse breeder will be sentenced today for abusing more than 170 horses.
At 9:30 a.m., Ernie Paragallo will be sentenced on 33 counts of animal cruelty.
Paragallo was convicted in March after investigators raided his Climax farm finding some horses in such bad shape they had to be put down.
He faces a maximum sentence of two years in jail, and a $33,000 fine. His racing license has since been revoked.
