Final entries will close at 10am on Monday, October 29, and the post position draw will be held at 4pm in downtown Louisville at Equestricon in the newly renovated Kentucky International Convention Center. The maximum field size is 14 for all races except the Juvenile Turf Sprint which has a max of 12, and 12 of the 14 races are oversubscribed at this point. Each race can have two also-eligibles listed at entry time, who can draw in if there are any scratches by Thursday morning.

The Breeders’ Cup will have a total of 14 Championship races (thirteen are Grade 1) spread over two days of racing with $30 million in purse money on the line. New in 2018, Friday November 2nd is billed as “Future Stars Friday” featuring all the Championship races for juveniles on the same card, including the inaugural $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (ungraded) and highlighted by the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Saturday November 3rd will have nine races for older horses headlined by the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles. The Championships will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for the ninth time. Tickets will probably sell out early, but if you still want to attend and don’t wish to pay a premium on the resale market, there will be general admission for both days. Note that unlike at the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, the infield is not available to general admission.

The Breeders’ Cup will be televised on NBC and NBC Sports with the schedule shown below:

WILD FOR WINX

TurfStars photo from Winx Facebook page “Dreaming of another Cox Plate”

Well here we go again, WINX is racing on the other side of the world and the amazing mare is going for her 4th COX PLATE.

The race is at Moonee Valley tonight (EST) at 2 a.m. and it is on HPIbet.com

It has been WINX mania over there with a litany of videos and studies about her and even her poop is being sold on eBay. Yes, her poop.

And the chatter is high that she meets a pretty good one in BENBATL from the Godolphin team. Will he be the one to end her streak?

“It’s not going to be easy to beat Winx, but I think it’s possible, and certainly I wouldn’t swap Benbatl for anything else in the race.” Benbatl’s jockey Oisin Murphy

Read the story here.

WINX Trivia

STRIDE: Winx’s stride in full flight is on average 6.53 metres, which is a lot smaller than Black Caviar’s 8.50 metres. To compensate for that small stride, Winx takes around 85 strides per 30 seconds, whilst her group one rivals take only 70.

FOOTFALLS: The standard top class galloper struggles to maintain 12 footfalls every five seconds, while Winx continues at a whopping 14 footfalls every five seconds, even in the closing stages of a race, explaining how she reels off sprinters sectionals in middle distance events.

LUNGS: Winx’s lungs distribute 10,000 litres of air per race and her heart beats 140 times per minute, distributing 30 litres of blood to her muscles, which are comprised of higher density, slow twitch fibres which use oxygen more efficiently to aid endurance, and allow her to sustain her top speed for a longer period than her rivals.

Ontario bred Bodemeister filly

A yearling filly by Bodemeister from Loving Vindication by Vindication sold at the big Fasig Tipton October sale this week to Canadian trainer Catherine Day Phillips who has put a group together to race the filly. The pretty dark bay brought $300,000 and the breeder is David Anderson’s Anderson Farms, who races horses with Day Phillips.

Anderson is also set to sell Loving Vindication at the November Sale at Fasig Tipton in Lexington just after the Breeders’ Cup races.

Overall, 960 yearlings changed hands for $34,188,100, good for an average of $35,613, all figures comparable to last year’s sale. The median rose 25% to $15,000 from $12,000 in 2017. The RNA rate was 22.8%.  Notably, the top 10 hips were spread as evenly as possible across the sessions, with three selling on the first day; two on the second; two yesterday; and three today, including the sale’s top colt.

Canadian buyers at the sale included Nick Gonzalez, who was quite busy  with several purchases, Alex Patykewich, Mike DePaulo and Gail Cox.

WOODBINE APPEALS DR. BRIAN VAN AREM FINE, SEEKS SUSPENSION

The restless among horsepeople at Woodbine was getting louder. Trainers reporting that owners wanting to move horses away from Woodbine and other trainers simply showing frustration.  The recent news that veterinarian Dr. Brian Arem was at the barn of leading trainer Norm McKnight shock-waving horses that were in the entries has led to the track management to push the AGCO for a bigger punishment for Dr. Van Arem.

One horse owner said, “This is a wonderful thing” in reference to the notice of appeal and noted that there “needs to be accountability” as far as the veterinarians are concerned.

WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT GROUP has filed a Notice of Appeal to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission in regards to a fine levied to veterinarian Dr. Brian Van Arem (see original ruling below)

DR. VAN AREM and trainer NORM MCKNIGHT were each fined for the shock-wave treatment of the horses BRIGHTER IDEAS and HALO LAELIA as well as CONSTANTINO while inside of the four-day, 96 hour regulation of such treatment. Brighter Ideas and Halo Laelia were shock-waved on July 30 and were already in the entries for Aug. 1, Wednesday evening (entered on the Friday, July 27. They were scratched. Constantino was in the entries on Aug. 3 and was scratched.

These treatments were reported by Woodbine security who witnessed the procedures. Security has been present at the McKnight and trainer Jim Ensom barn since late summer.

McKnight was fined $5,000 and in his ruling he stated that “it was the responsibility of the veterinarian to know what the rules are and any consultation regarding treatments is left to the veterinarian”.

On Oct. 17, WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT GROUP, which does have the ability to issue a trespassing notice to its property, filed a Notice of Appeal for the Dr. Van Arem ruling, seeking a harsher penalty from the AGCO.

Citing that it is committed to “providing a racing product which has a high assurance of integrity”, Woodbine, in the Notice states that the “misconduct of Dr. Van Arem at Woodbine racetrack has brought the conduct of racing at Woodbine into disrepute” and that “Trainers are considering moving to other racetracks.”

Read the original the McKnight and Dr. Van Arem ruling:

2018 TB 10978, MCKNIGHT, Norman

2018 TB 10951, VAN AREM, Brian

Notice of Appeal – Scanned Copy – October 17 2018

Woodbine is represented by Deepshihka Dutt who would not comment on the case. The affidavit by Woodbine was submitted by Jonathan Zammit, vice present of racing at Woodbine.
