 Sheik spends millions at Fasig-Tipton

Surprise appearance helps push sales up at annual yearlings auction at Spa

By CHRISTEN GOWAN, Staff writer

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Sale had an explosive first night in which a handful of horses commanded more than $1 million, two of whom were sired by 2006 Travers Stakes champion Bernardini. All three yearlings that sold for more than $1 million were purchased by John Ferguson, chief bloodstock agent for Sheikh Mohammend bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who made a surprise visit to this year’s sale.

Figures were up in all categories. The total sales amount showed an increase of 40 percent over last year’s total, said Terrence Collier, Fasig-Tipton director of marketing. “We had good horses,” Collier said. “At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

Auction officials said the sheik’s presence had a significant role in the sales being up.

The top sales prize of the night, a dark brown filly sired by Medaglia D’Oro, who also sired Preakness-winning filly Rachel Alexandra, sold for $1.5 million. Offering a filly of her magnitude during the heyday of Rachel Alexandra didn’t hurt the yearling’s chances of selling, said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales, the consignment agency who sold her.

FATAL BULLET will rise in PHOENIX

Canadian Horse of the year FATAL BULLET will rest up until the PHOENIX STAKES at Keeneland in early October, according to a report on www.thehorses.com written by Jonathan Huntington.

The report also says BEAR’S ROCKET is out for the year and will not be in the Canadian Derby coming up later this month.

Here is the report:

Bear’s Rocket – a three-year-old who was on the Kentucky Derby trail earlier this year – will not be coming to Edmonton for the Canadian Derby. “He needs some time off,” said trainer Reade Baker. “He’s done until next spring.”…

Canadian thoroughbred of the year Fatal Bullet finished last (sixth) in Sunday’s $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga. Owned by Albertan Danny Dion, Fatal Bullet was sent off at 5-1. “He hated the dirt,” said Baker. “He didn’t handle it.” Fatal Bullet will now sit until Oct. 8 when the Phoenix Stake (Grade III) runs at Keeneland. From there the plan is the Breeders’ Cup…
