Seven-year-old PINK LLOYD has left us without words and a lot of really cool numbers.

The amazing Old Forester – Gladiator Queen, Great Gladiator gelding rolled to his fourth straight win in as many starts for 2019 in Sunday’s Shepperton Stakes at Woodbine, putting up a 98 Beyer Figure for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.40.

Pink Lloyd is certainly one of the best Canadian-bred sprinters the country has produced and fittingly, his second win in the Shepperton brings to mind another great Canadian bred. Shepperton, a 22-time winner who won the Canadian Championship twice, the Breeders Stakes and others while carrying weight up to 137 pounds, was considered one of the best Canadian-breds to be seen in decades when he raced in the early 1940s.

Trainer Robert Tiller, who now has won more Shepperton than any other trainer, five, is already a Hall of Fame inductee and what he has done to keep this delicate fellow in top top form for three years has been Hall of Fame worthy.

“I haven’t had any [other] horses win 20 races, and I’ve never had a horse win more than three, or four, or five stakes,” said Tiller. This horse is not a horse. He’s half-human. We love him to death. He’s just one of the great loves of my life. He’s just amazing. He carries weight. He carried 127 pounds. He runs at horses. He’s never been better.”

Entourage Racing Stable owns Pink Lloyd and Eurico Rosa da Silva is his regular rider.

The Kenora Stakes for yearling sales stakes graduates is no doubt up next for the gelding and it is a race he has won two straight years.

There is a full brother to PINK LLOYD in the upcoming Canadian Premier Yearling Sale held by the CTHS Ontario on August 29. Hip number 103 is a grey colt by Old Forester from Gladiator Queen.

KEEP ON TRUCKIN was a buzz colt at the CTHS Ontario Yearling Sale a year ago and that buzz is just getting louder.

The handsome Ontario sired and bred 2-year-old is 2 for 2 in his career and he won the Clarendon Stakes easily last weekend with a 92 Beyer Figure for 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.05.

Trained by Catherine Day Phillips for a partnership of George and Brian Ledson and David Anderson’s Anderson Farms, the gelding was ridden to victory by Emma-Jayne Wilson. He is currently the 3rd fastest 2yo by Beyer Figures in North America.

“This horse is a beast. He knows what he’s doing,” said Wilson. “Catherine’s said it in interviews before about how laid back he is about everything. I breezed him in the morning the other day and he just did it so easily and today, when the doors opened, he was all business and he went on with it.”

Bred in Ontario by Tim Meeuse and Arika Everatt-Meeuse, the Society’s Chairman-Colbra gelding was a $110,000 purchase from the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Yearling Sale. He was named by Brian Ledson as a surprise for his father George Ledson, founder of Cavalier Transportation Services.

The talented youngster was also untouchable in his career debut on July 7 winning the five-furlong race by nearly a dozen lengths.

“He trained very well into his first race and how well he ran was quite shocking really, for any horse to run that well and win that easily and come back and be very laidback and not revved up from it at all,” said Day Phillips. “I was afraid it was too much to ask for him to do the same again and he came and did the same again. He’s a very special horse.”

The Simcoe Stakes for yearling Sales graduates on Aug. 28 is likely up next.

CANADIAN HORSE RACING HALL OF FAME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT

5:30 reception, 6:30 dinner and inductions

JOSIE CARROLL will become the first woman trainer to be inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame on Wed. night in Mississauga. And Carroll is one of this country’s all-time top trainers with two Queen’s Plate winners and dozens of champions and stakes winners in her career.

Josie is one of 5 inductees on the Thoroughbred side for 2019. MICKEY WALLS, who was a wonder kid jockey when he started riding in 1990 in Vancouver, will also join the Hall as well as Bory Margolus and horses Lexie Lou and All Along.

MANITOBA DERBY – OIL MONEY

OIL MONEY led all the way through 1 1/8 miles to win Monday’s Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs, yet another Derby win for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Owned by Charles Garvey, the 3-year-old Florida-bred was coming off a big win in the Golden Boy Stakes in his Manitoba debut. A stakes winner at 2 at Zia Park, Oil Money set a slow pace in the Manitoba Derby and won by 4 lengths in 1:54 3/5 as the 3 to 5 favourite.

The winner is a son of J P’s Gusto (a son of Successful Appeal and from the stakes placed Candy Ride mare Cryptocandiac.

Oil Money Wins Manitoba Derby: Wire to wrie win caps successful racing weekend

Robertino Diodoro wasn’t convinced his horse could handle the distance.

But trusting his fellow trainers proved to be extremely valuable for Diodoro when Oil Money went wire to wire to capture the 71st running of the $75,000 Manitoba Derby on Monday at Assiniboia Downs, with a time of 1:54.60 in the race that travels 1 1/8 miles.

“A lot of credit to my two assistants in Canterbury, if it wasn’t for them, the horse wouldn’t have been here,” said Diodoro. “I wasn’t a believer in (Oil Money) going that far (in terms of distance). Matt Williams is one of the guys that gets on him over there (at Canterbury Park) and both brothers kept saying, ‘I don’t care about his breeding and I don’t care how he’s built, this horse will run. The further we trained him, the stronger he gets.’ He showed it.”

Calgary Caper wins 3rd Classic, Here’s Hannah wins 11th straight under 129 pounds

The 8-year-old CALGARY CAPER capped a big holiday Monday racing day at Hastings Park with his third win in the BC Cup Classic. The son of El Corredor is a Kentucky bred who has 11 career wins and has been a top older horse in BC for several years.

HERE’S HANNAH is yet another remarkable Canadian racehorse competing in 2019. This 4-year-old filly is now 12 for 13 in her career and she carried 129 pounds in her Distaff win at 1 1/16 miles. She is a BC bred by Numaany owned by BC Stable and trained by John Morrison.

INFINITE PATIENCE is an exciting 2-year-old filly as she won the Debutante at 6 1/2 furlongs by more than 11 lengths. She is 2 for 2 and is a daughter of Sungold (by A.P. Indy) – Montero by Louis Quatorze. Bred and co-owned by William DeCoursey (RNH Stable also owns), this filly is one to watch on the west coast.

MELMICH RETIRED, ARRIVES AT LONGRUN

At eight years of age, he is by Wilko out of Little Swoon, has a record of 17 wins, 16 seconds and 5 thirds in 46 starts and accumulated more than $1.1 million in purse money during his career. This gentlemanly horse arrived at the LongRun farm yesterday and has settled in very well. We look forward to getting to know Melmich and finding out where his retirement will lead.

FASIG TIPTON SARATOGA DAY 1

Average yearling price up almost 7 percent

Established sires ruled during the first session of the 99th Saratoga Sale held Monday at the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion in Saratoga Springs, NY. Three-time leading sire Tapit, global superstar Medaglia d’Oro, and current leading sire Into Mischief accounted for five of the top 10 hips on the evening.

A colt by Tapit topped the first session when sold for $1,00,000 to West Point Thoroughbreds, L.E.B., agent. Offered as Hip 80 by Lane’s End, agent, the colt was bred in Kentucky by Summer Wind Equine. The colt is the second foal out of Edgewood S. (G3) winner Feathered, by Indian Charlie.

“We saw very competitive bidding throughout the evening,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. There was a lot of strength and a lot of diversity in that buying bench. The results were in line with our expectations based upon the feedback we’ve gotten this week from both buyers and sellers.”

Tapit was also responsible for the session’s top filly, which went through the ring as Hip 82 immediately after the session-topper. The leading filly was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent for Heider Family Stables from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. Out of 100% winner-producer Pension, by Seeking the Gold, whose six winners include Grade 2 winner Annual Report and stakes winner Giant Payday. This deep female family includes Grade 1 winners The Liberal Member, Dancing Spree, Fantastic Find, Finder’s Fee, and Bigger Picture.

A filly by global sire Medaglia d’Oro also sold well when hammered down for $900,000 midway through the session. The filly was offered as Hip 49 by Eaton Sales, agent and purchased by Kerri Radcliffe, agent. She is a daughter of stakes winner Light the City (Street Sense), from the family of millionaire Two Step Salsa. The filly was bred in Kentucky by Breeze Easy, LLC.

Overall, 61 yearlings sold for $22,775,000, good for an average of $373,361, which represented a 6.6% increase over last year’s first session average of $348,976. The median increased 5.0% to $315,000 from $300,000 in 2018. Sixteen horses sold for $500,000 or more.
