RULING ANGEL HONOURED

Last racing show on THE SCORE

The season heads into its final weeks and the last racing show on THE SCORE cable channel is tonight and the feature is an overnight stake called the Ruling Angel.

The race is named for a Canadian Horse of the Year – she was a 2yo filly that won that big award – who was owned and bred by Sam-Son Farms.

Trainer MARK CASSE has three in the field incluing Eugene Melnyk’s GEMSWICK PARK, a workmanlike winner of her local debut who will start from the 1 post.

CLOSING SPEED has displayed flashes of ability at times and is another contender. His other runner, RETRACEABLE, is fresh but has not done much since her big win as a 2yo in the Princess Elizabeth. The best chance that a Casse runner won’t win will come from COSMIC QUEEN.

BREEDERS’ CUP NOV. 6/7

The THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS reports that E.P. Taylor winner LAHALEEB will pass on the Breeders’ Cup and will go to Hong Kong.

“There is a ‘Win and You’re In’ policy attached to the

Woodbine race, but that’s a bit misleading,

as it would cost $100,000 to put Lahaleeb into the Breeders’ Cup scheme, plus

another $60,000 to supplement her into the Filly & Mare Turf,” trainer Mick Channon said. “I’m also mindful

of the fact that the going is likely to be too quick for this filly in America. Last year it was firm. She=s in the sales, but I would love her to accompany Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) on the trip to Sha Tin. I do think the [Dec. 13] G1 Hong Kong Cup would suit her.”

The BAKER bullies are in Santa Anita, FATAL BULLET, reigning Horse of the Year inCanada, and top 2yo filly BIOFUEL.

Baker and JOSIE CARROLL, plus jockeys Eurico Risa Da Silva and Rob Landry, maybe the only Canadian connections along with Bear Stables and Donver Stable at the Breeders’ Cup this year.

As mentioned by a THOROUGHBLOG reader on a recent Comment (click the comments portion of the post or just scroll down to the end of each post to see what others are saying), the stewards at Woodbine did indeed reverse an order of finish that did not have an inquiry or disqualification.

Paul Nielsen, trainer of BIGGER BREEZE, who was 2nd by a sore nose to D’Wild Storm in an allowance race on Oct. 11 was placed first in therace recently as the horse had been struck in the face with the whip of Patrick Husbands, who rode D’Wild Storm to a head-win.

Patrick Husbands, aboard D’Wild Storm, inadvertently struck the head of Bigger Breeze with his whip with about a sixteenth of a mile to run. Jockey Gerry Olguin, driving for the wire with his head down, was not aware of the incident.

The stewards missed the infraction during their initial review of the race. Nielsen and Olguin were informed of the infraction by third parties but by the time they contacted the stewards the result was official.

In a ruling released last Sunday the stewards disqualified D’Wild Storm and placed him second, making Bigger Breeze the official winner for all purposes excepting parimutuel wagering.

Husbands was fined $200 for his whip miscue.

In other rulings:  apprentice jockey Brian Cheyne has been fined $200 for using his whip when his mount, Right Trajectory, “was not visibly responding or in contention for a meaningful position.” Right Trajectory, competing in the second race here last Thursday, finished last of eight
