WINX:  28 STRAIGHT WINS, 21 GROUP 1’S

“It’s getting desperate” – track announcer at Flemington as Winx surges in last 200 metres

(above -fractional times from the TURNBULL STAKES for WINX, courtesy Candace Hare)

At the 400 metres mark the crowd might have had some concerns. Winx was still out the back, only a handful of horses behind her.

When would she produce that electric burst?

Would Bowman try to find an inside path, or switch her wide?

Would the gap come at all?

Surely she couldn’t get beaten. Not here, not today, not in such a picture perfect situation. – Michael Lynch, Sydny Morning Herald

The Cox Plate is up in next in three weeks:

WOODBINE’S BABIES

Saturday’s Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes is headlined by the Ontario-bred TIZ BREATHAKING (Tiznow), winner of the Shady Well Stakes last time out for Bill Graham and trained Mike Doyle and invader CARNIVAL COLORS (GB) a fancy maiden winner ar Arlington for Godolphin.

The 1 1/16 mile field of 7 comes down to these gals and Tiz Breathtaking could state her case for Champion 2-year-old filly with a victory.

Her competition for that award, at this stage, is MY GAL BETTY, who is entered in Keeneland’s Jessamine Stakes next week on the turf.

SUNDAY’S prestigious CUP AND SAUCER, one of the track’s oldest races, will be decided on the grass at 1 1/16 miles. With rain today, the turf could be a bit on  the squishy side.

There are no stakes winners in the race for Canadian breds that offers a $225,000 purse but some exciting prospects including AVIE’S FLATTER (Flatter), coming off a troubled run in the Grade 1 Summer, impressive debut winner OJISAN for Glen Sikura and friends and the fillies BOLD SCRIPT and KITTEN’S GIRL.
