FallStars Weekend preview

The opening-weekend stakes could make Breeders’ Cup participants out of horses that win or at least perform well enough to suit their connections, but we’ll focus on the opportunity for some good wagering possibilities. See the text at the bottom for details on the stakes.

On opening day, the Phoenix (G3) features CAPT. CANDYMAN CAN (Candy Ride [Arg]), who exits a win (via disqualification) in the King’s Bishop S. (G1). He’ll be tough if he can duplicate that effort, but it came on dirt and the three-year-old has never started at Keeneland. He was unplaced in his lone previous attempt on a synthetic track at Arlington. Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) runner-up FATAL BULLET (Red Bullet) could compete for favoritism and is a top-quality front runner on synthetic tracks. We give E Z DREAMER (In Excess [Ire]) an upset shot in this sprint.

The Alcibiades (G1) has a dozen going, with SHE BE WILD (Offlee Wild) looking like the possible choice. She is trained by Wayne Catalano, the top money-winning trainer at the recently closed Arlington meet, and is three for three in her career, all of them coming on the Polytrack in Chircago. BEAUTICIAN (Dehere) is trained by Ken McPeek, who has three Alcibiades wins to his credit, and will also attract a lot of money off some classy outings at Saratoga. AMEN HALLELUJAH (Montbrook) could continue to show more off a couple of nice wins and will make her first start for Richard Dutrow, a powerful betting angle. She’s bound to go off at decent odds.

MAZARINE/GREY head weekend events at Woodbine

Some of the lustre has been lost on the graded 2yo stakes at Woodbine as far as their impact on the U.S. racing scene – the Mazarine and Grey – but there remains a bit of interest in the races from a local standpoint.

Local horse owner ROB SMITHEN has BAY TO BAY inthe Mazarine tomorrow and she won the Grade 3 Natalma inworkmanlike fashion.

The exciting A.P. Indy filly CASCADING should betough- she is impeccably bred and had a super debut outing.

The Grey features stakes winner GHOST FLEET, who was hailed by some as a superstar and while he has done little wrong on Polytrack, he was all out to win his latest over a filly.

The Grey could go to stakes winner WILLIAM’S KITTEN as the Kitten’s Joy colt doe snot have much to beat unless BEAR TOUGH GUY, a debut winner on the grass, is a star.

WOODBINE HELPS IN BETTING ON FAR HILLS RACES

DAILY RACING FORM REPORT

Far Hills to offer mutuel betting on jump races

By Matt Hegarty

Bettors will be able to make win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta wagers on six steeplechase races at Far Hills, N.J., on Oct. 17 as part of an effort by the National Steeplechase Association to package 11 races into what it is calling the U.S. Steeplechase Championships, according to officials of the association.

The wagering menu was confirmed after the steeplechase group was able to reach an agreement with Woodbine Race Course in Ontario to host the betting pools for the six-race Far Hills lineup, which includes steeplechasing’s most prestigious race, the Grade 1 Grand National. In addition to the Far Hill races, five other races forming the International Gold Cup at The Plains in Virginia will be broadcast live as part of the event during a five-hour telecast on NBC Universal Sports.

HASTINGS REPORT

SILLY FELLA PLEASES SURPRISED OWNERS AFTER UPSET WIN IN JACK DIAMOND FUTURITY

Vancouver, B.C. (Oct. 5/09) – British Columbia Horse Racing Hall of Fame owners Nick and Pauline Felicella experienced another golden moment together Sunday at Hastings Racecourse.

The Felicella’s watched with great delight as Silly Fella staged a major upset in the 79th running of the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity for 2-year-olds colts and geldings foaled in Canada. Trained by Lenore Daponte and ridden by Chad Hoverson, Silly Fella paid a handsome $44.40 after leading from start to finish. Final time for the six and one-half furlongs was 1:17.42.

Hoverson said he’d never laid eyes on Silly Fella until he got to the paddock. “When he broke on top I just sat on him and went with it,” Hoverson after drawing off to win by more than eight lengths. “I thought there would be a bit more pace in the race but I was comfortable having him on the lead.”

Mr. & Mrs. Felicella first got involved as owners in 1978 and have always taken great pride in promoting the racing industry locally. They have shared the Jack Diamond Futurity winner’s circle on three previous occasions: Desert Alf (2007); Sharp Suspicion (1992); and Salt of the Sea (1987). The Felicella’s pride and joy is Spaghetti Mouse, the all-time B.C.-bred money earning.

Vying Ty Grr scored a convincing front-running win in Saturday’s $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity for 2-year-old fillies foaled in Canada. Ridden by Richard Hamel and trained by Barbara Heads, Vying Ty Grr won by four lengths over favoured Victorious Vye in a final time of 1:17.90 for the six and one-half furlongs. She paid $9.10.

“The horse is really good getting away from the gate,” Hamel said. “I gave her a breather going down the backstretch and when I asked her at the quarter-pole, that was about it.”
