HIS NAME IS CITIZEN GELLER!

Fleet racehorse named for Woodbine Track Announcer

During the winter months, Woodbine track announcer ROBERT GELLER makes his home in the south, very much south, in New Mexico as he is also the track announcer for Sunland Park.

It was there that the personable Geller, born in England and raised in Australia, met Larry and Denise Nichols. He became friends with the couple and in 2012, when Geller was sworn in as a US citizen, they stood with him at the ceremony in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Nichols’ also breed racehorses and they were seeking a name for their newest addition, a grey fellow by Pro Prado.

“My friends Larry and Denise are officially UKUSA stables, he American and she British, and they accompanied me to my swearing in ceremony ,” said Geller this week. “They wanted to name a horse after me and he was foaled on my half birthday, January 31,”

The grey was christened CITIZEN GELLER and the now 6-year-old is considered one of the best New Mexico bred runners in recent memory.

CITIZEN GELLER won the Mt. Christo Rey Stakes at Sunland last weekend for his ninth win in 34 races. His earnings are over $390,000.

Robert says the gelding has a lot of similarities to his namesake.

“He is salt ‘n pepper like me, lazy in the morning but all focus by racetime like me, and you can lay all over him and he won’t mind, like me.”

You can check out Citizen Geller’s latest win on the attached video!

MORE WINX UPDATE – CHIPPING NORTON STAKES NEXT

Trainer Chris Waller has announced that Winx will not run in the Apollo Stakes on February 17 after jockey Hugh Bowman failed in his bid to have a suspension overturned.

Instead, Waller will wait until the Chipping Norton Stakes on March 3 when Bowman will be available to ride Australia’s greatest horse.

Bowman has been a huge part of the Winx story and Waller said in press release that was posted on Twitter that he would rather give the mare another barrier trial than look for a replacement.

He said: “Following consultation between the owners of Winx and I, the decision has been made for Winx to resume her racing on March 3 in the Group One Chipping Norton over 1600m.

“Hugh Bowman is a very important part of Winx and we feel that we can go straight into the Chipping Norton first up without the need to resume in the Apollo Stakes as we had originally planned.

“She races well fresh and we are well ahead of schedule with her, so I will simply give her a third trial to ensure her fitness levels are high enough to compete at her best in this race.

“Should Hugh have been suspended in the middle or late in the preparation closer to her significant targets we would have opted to use a suitable replacement rider for Winx, however we are in the fortunate position that we can alter her starting point without affecting her main targets this preparation.”
