BARBADOS!

THOROUGHBLOG is extremely lucky that it will head down to BARBADOS (TODAY) for Saturday’s SANDY LANE GOLD CUP,

the biggest race on the island which has lured an intriguing field for 2010.

Canadian bred millionaire STERWINS is the first horse to run in the race for owner Eugene Melnyk since the

owner’s KRTHIR WAS 2ND IN 2005 (kathir won the Gold Cup in 2004, Melnyk’s first win in his home country’s big race but the horse didn’t get the official win until almost a year later after a long inquiry from post race

testing.

Adding to the large field is MET MILE winner BRIBON and his stablemate BAD ACTION who won the Pegasus Stakes at Meadowlands last fall.

Last year’s winner Daylight Express is in the race too.

Stay tuned to THOROUGBLOG (as well as DAILY RACING FORM and BOOD-HORSE as updates wil be coming from Barbados during our stay.

THE BARBADOS ADVOCATE HANDICAPS THE GOLD CUP

Picking the winner of the XXIX Sandy Lane Gold Cup will be tough

3/3/2010

There is nowhere you can turn without hearing the word ‘Gold Cup’, it seems that this year’s Sandy Lane

Barbados Gold Cup contenders, and that is both horses and jockeys, are creating the type of excitement that has not been associated with this race since it was first run back in 1982.

Discussions range from, can Areutalkintome make all? Or can he get in front of Apostle? Or will they run each

other in the ground? What about Bouncebak, is she going to want to play a front running role to make sure that

Areutalkintome and Apostle don’t go to front and slow the pace down? Are the overseas guns Sterwins, Bribon, and Bad Action going to blast the rest away? Or will they not be able to handle the tight right hand track. Are

we going to see as big an upset as when Irish Lover won in 1983? The questions go on and on!!

Some say Sterwins has an advantage with Patrick Husbands in the saddle, as he is the best jockey Barbados has ever produced, while others feel Andy Ward is as good as any jockey anywhere in the world when riding at the Garrison, and that puts Daylight Express in with an outstanding chance of defending his title, which he won

last year.

The 2009 Horse of the Year is scheduled to race for the first time as a 4-year-old when she runs March 13 in

WOODBINE FOOD WORKERS ACCEPT DEAL

Food service and hospitality workers at Woodbine racetrack have accepted a management offer that was originally turned down by union negotiators.

Woodbine Entertainment Group had locked out the 329 workers at 6 a.m. Saturday, four hours after tabling a

final offer.

“This is a beginning. At least we took a stand,” said Joann Brown, a server at the racetrack and a member of

the union negotiating team. “Our spirits are high and we are here to fight another day.”
