The Rusty Stirrup

My name is Alexa Cheater. After wrapping up my mostly unremarkable junior career where I finally managed to successfully navigate a 3’6” jumper course, I was faced with the same tough question that haunts young riders everywhere. Focus on my riding and triumphantly lead Canada into the next Olympics, or put horses aside to pursue higher education?

Fast forward more than a decade and it’s clear I chose the latter as most of you have likely never heard of me. Now with my 30th birthday looming, I’m gearing up to get back in the saddle and want to take you along for the ride as I sedately walk down the road to equestrian greatness.

Join me as I chronicle the struggle of wiggling my ample bum into a pair of breeches, as I try to get on for the first time and end up developing an irrational fear of mounting blocks, or the triumph of my first successful ride – which mostly consists of that sedate walk mentioned earlier.

Wish me luck!

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

This week was a bit of an oddity. Instead of riding alone in the ring with no one but Jen, Luc’s owner and my sister, on the ground for support, I had the opportunity to actually ride with a friend—Ashley…

Pushing Through the Wall

Have you ever been so exhausted that you can barely remember your own name? That was me this week, walking around in a state of mental fog so thick I wasn’t sure which direction I was headed. Not an ideal…

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

That’s what I’ve been trying to make my motto of late. Things have been a whole lot of hectic in my day-to-day life and I’ve felt a little overwhelmed. So overwhelmed in fact that this weekend I wasn’t even sure…

Exploit the Weakness

Some animals know when their owners are sick. They stick close, cuddle, and do their best to be helpful and faithful companions. And then there’s Luc. Instead of being saintly, he took the opportunity to be a sinner. I’m suffering…

A Heels Down Kind of Day

Wind and rain and snow – oh my! It was a blustery day at the barn this weekend, with strong winds, heavy rain, and snow sliding off the arena roof left right and center. After bringing Luc into the barn,…

I Can’t Feel My Face When I’m With You

Frigid cold temperatures (-45C with the wind chill) was the story of the weekend. And while I really would have rather curled up inside under the blankets with a big cup of hot cocoa, that wasn’t an option. Just because…

Ride and Repeat

When presented with the opportunity to ride not once, but twice, on the same day, why would anyone say no? That’s the opportunity I was presented with this weekend. I started my day off in the usual way, with a…

Relax and Enjoy the Ride

That was my motto this week. After last week’s wild bareback ride, this week I was determined to have a relaxing and enjoyable time. Thankfully, Luc seemed to agree. I had been a bit hesitant when Jen, Luc’s owner and…

Jen Warned Me!

You may be wondering a bit about the title of this week’s ride. Well, it’s in honour of my sister Jen, who just happens to be Luc’s owner. But let me back up a bit and provide just a little…

Beating the Winter Blues

While there are some things I really love about winter – the snow, the copious amounts of hot chocolate I feel entitled to drink, and some of those fabulous winter activities – there are also those aspects of the season…
