The 14th annual Woodbine ‘Turf Races,’ in support of the 2012 United Way Campaign, was a winning one all-round, as employees of Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG), along with business partners and community sponsors raised a record $85,000 on Sunday’s five-race card.

The popular fundraising event has continued to grow in size and participation over time. An event that was once an in-house fundraiser has grown considerably. This year, for the first time, the public was invited to join in on the festivities.

WEG matches all the money raised by its employees dollar for dollar.

“Today’s Turf Races was another remarkable Woodbine Entertainment Group fundraising event where the team led by Wendy Loiselle rallied their corporate partners, volunteers and community agencies to come together to raise a generous $85,000 for United Way Toronto and the community,” said Allison Urowitz, Director, Corporate Donor Relations, United Way Toronto. “We are ever grateful for our longtime partnership with WEG.”

The event, held on a picture-perfect morning at Woodbine Racetrack, included breakfast and other events for Woodbine employees and their families. The card, which included three relays and a 5k walk/run, was hosted by Canadian riding legend Sandy Hawley, as well as television commentators Jeff Bratt, Jason Portuondo and Jaimi Fellows. All of the races were run over the world-renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

“WEG is honoured to support the United Way through this truly unique event,” said Nick Eaves, WEG’s President and CEO. “Once again, our employees and many partners banded together to be part of something that is very special to all of us.”

WEG has donated over $6 million into its local community since 1998, adopting a progressive and leading Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda that is firmly woven into the fabric of its organization. By doing so, WEG has enhanced its reputation as an innovative and insightful leader, earning industry recognition, multiple awards and customer respect for its actions that serve the greater good.
