Veteran Canadian eventing team member, Selena O’Hanlon of Kingston, ON, earned a top-five finish in the CIC 3* at the Red Hills International Horse Trials, held March 10-13 in Tallahassee, FL.
O’Hanlon took fourth place aboard Foxwood High, the 13-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding she partnered with at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, FRA, as well as the the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, MEX.
Owned by John and Judy Rumble, and sired by Rio Bronco W, ‘Woody’ as he’s affectionately known around the barn, danced through the dressage phase to earn a score of 44.70 penalties. After adding four jumping faults in show jumping and just 4.80 time faults on cross-country, he and O’Hanlon would finish with a total score of 53.50 penalties.
Piloting Zephyr, a 14-year-old gelding sired by Rather Well and owned by Kelly Damp, O’Hanlon was also the top placed Canadian in the CIC 1*. Sitting in a tie for 18th following dressage, O’Hanlon expertly guided Zephyr to a clear jumping effort on cross country, picking up just 1.20 time penalties to move into 13th. After a double clear performance in the final show jumping phase, the pair would advance up the leaderboard again, ultimately finishing eighth overall.
Leading the charge for Canada in the CIC 2*, Samantha Elsenaar of Port Perry, ON, rode her own Banbury Sky to an eighth place finish. She and the nine-year-old Thoroughbred-cross gelding by Verdi added just 4.40 cross-country time faults to their dressage score for a total of 58.30 penalties. Less than half a point behind was teammate Karl Slezak of Tottenham, ON, who captured ninth aboard Fernhill Wishes (Chacoa x Gildawn Diamond), a seven-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding he co-owns with Kirk Hoppner.
