Rupert May of Langley, BC has tendered his resignation from the Equestrian Canada (EC) Board of Directors, effective immediately.
May joined the EC Board in August 2017, and in October was elected to the positions of EC Vice President, and Chair of the Board’s HR Committee, and Finance and Audit Committee.
As a successful entrepreneur in the sport industry with over 16 years of experience as a senior finance professional, May has been an invaluable asset to the EC Board. He not only excelled in a leadership role as Vice President, but also generously devoted countless hours of his time and expertise to the vital areas of finance and HR, most notably supporting EC in completing the transition to a more suitable financial software system, and helping to establish and implement clear, consistent, timely and transparent financial reporting. In addition, he was involved in the taskforce for the selection of the new Chief Executive Officer, the Memorandum of Agreement between EC and the Provincial and Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs), and the Canadian Equestrian Development joint initiative with the PTSOs.
EC’s recent publication of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to embark on a new initiative to improve the management, renewal and support for sport licence holders led May to consider pursuing an opportunity to serve EC in a different capacity.
“I am a passionate supporter of EC and the equestrian community in Canada, and when I became aware of an opportunity to serve EC from another perspective, I was then faced with a difficult decision,” explained May. “It is not possible for me to follow both paths, and ultimately I came to the conclusion that at the present time, I feel that I can better serve EC and have a greater impact on the growth and stability of the sport by stepping down from the Board and focusing on an alternate path.”
May continued, “It has been an honour to work alongside the talented, dedicated and experienced group of colleagues that make up the EC Board of Directors. I believe this Board has had extraordinary accomplishments to date, and I have no doubt that there will be many more in the future.”
On behalf of the EC Board and staff, EC President Meg Krueger thanked May for his hard work and contributions, stating, “Rupert has worked tirelessly for the benefit of EC, taking on multiple demanding volunteer roles at the Board level, and seeing initiatives through to the highest degree of quality and professionalism. He will be greatly missed on the EC Board.”
