Amateur show jumper Rebecca “Becca” Weissbard died after a fall while competing at the HITS-on-the-Hudson VIII in Saugerties, N.Y., on August 31, 2016.

The 22-year-old from Manorville, on Long Island, was riding Remember Me in a 1.0m Jumper Classic when her mount tripped after knocking a rail and fell on her. The pair won a 1.0m jumper class earlier in the day.

HITS released the following statement: “It is with great sadness that HITS informs the equestrian community of an accident involving a talented young athlete at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York, on August 31, 2016. The athlete suffered a fatal fall during a 1.0m Jumper Class in Jumper Ring 1. HITS extends its deepest sympathy to the athlete’s family and to the entire horse sport community who feels the impact of this significant loss.”

Weissbard was a talented rider, having represented the United States at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel, winning individual gold and team silver.

This is the first fatality at the facility since it opened in 2004.
