Toronto, ON – The Ontario Quarter Horse Racing Industry Development Program is inviting applications for a job shadowing opportunity with the Exercise Rider/Jockey Training Program at Olds College in 2010.

This is an 18-week contract position. The successful candidate will participate in formal instruction in Alberta from February 1st to May 7th, 2010. He/she will work with the instructional team at Olds College and Northlands Park as they teach 15 students in a post secondary environment for entry-level positions in the flat racing industry. He/she will learn how to instruct in a classroom setting with the guidance of a four-person team in their fifth year of course delivery.

The successful candidate will job shadow, and then be integrated with the team having exposure to all the duties required for successful delivery of this course (horse procurement, barn management, mounted track safety, ponying, riding skills, classroom theory and riding fitness). The successful applicant will return to Ontario at the end of the course where he/she will be responsible for a supervisory and reporting role for two Ontario Rider Scholarship students, assessing their 60-ride practicum and submitting the evaluations to Olds College.

The successful applicant will be required to submit regular activity reports as well as a comprehensive summary, upon completion of the contract, which will support the launch of the Olds College Exercise Rider Training Program in Ontario.

Applicants to this program must:

• Be at least 25 years of age by January 1st, 2010

• Have a minimum of five years of professional riding experience (galloping). Experience as a jockey is an asset

• Have excellent communication and people skills

• Have a thorough knowledge of the Ontario Racing Industry and its key players

• Post secondary education is an asset

• Have basic computer skills
