On December 4, 2019, the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) learned they lost their lawsuit against the Canadian government regarding how horses are transported to Japan and South Korea for slaughter. However, they believe the judge made some errors in law that could be appealed.

Sinikka Crosland, executive director and president of the CHDC, said: “We are pleased to report that our lawyer, Rebeka Breder, filed a Notice of Appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal January 2, 2020. The notice advises that an appeal has been launched against the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and it asks that the previous judgment be set aside.

“It is imperative that we see this through to the end. As Ms. Breder states, ‘Declining to hear this matter would send a chilling message to the public that animals do not matter. With respect, doing so would be wrong.'”
