Animal Justice, a Canadian animal rights group, is calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages on Prince Edward Island, similar to the one announced in Montreal recently.
The group’s CEO, Camille Labchuk, says they want P.E.I.’s Animal Welfare Act amended to prohibit the popular tourist attraction. She added that horse-drawn carriages are no longer a necessary form of transportation, and that horses should not be forced into labour.
The owner and operator of Emerald Isle Carriage Tours in Charlottetown, Sarah Greenan, says her roster of eight Belgians and Percherons thrive as working horses, which is what they were bred for. She explained that her horses take turns, in pairs of two, pulling her 22-person carriage. She stressed that they are well cared for and relaxed in their work.
