Eleonore Elstone and Jody Schloss had excellent, warm weather for their Team Tests during the second day of Para-Dressage competition on Friday, August 31, at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Riding Zareno, owned by Franklin Posmus, in the Grade IV Team test in the morning, Elstone of Langley, BC, finished in 10th place, scoring 66.688%.

“My horse was such a good boy in the ring today,” said Elstone of Zareno, who had never been ridden in a stadium like the one at the London Paralympics. “He was very focused. We had a little bobble in our extended trot, but overall I am very happy with our performance.”

“The atmosphere in the ring is electric but not over the top,” she added. “We had so much preparation going into these games and it gave me a lot of confidence when I competed today. It also helps that I have the experience from attending the Games in 2008.”

In her Paralympic debut riding her own horse Inspector Rebus, Schloss of Toronto, ON earned a score of 63.882% in the Grade 1a Team test this afternoon, which was good for 12th place.

“I am so excited to finally say that I have competed at the Paralympics,” said Schloss. “My horse was really good for me today.”

The competition continues tomorrow with second phase of team competition, the Individual Championship test for Grades II and IB, while Grades IV, III, and IA will take place on September 2. The scores from the Team and Individual Championship tests will be combined to determine the overall team results and medals. Individual medals will also be awarded for Individual Championship test.

The Individual Freestyle Tests for Grades 1b and II will take place on September 3, while the final days of competition will wrap-up with the Grade 1a, III and IV Individual Freestyle tests on September 4.

“I am so proud of Jody, this being her first Paralympics,” said Andrea Taylor, National Team Coach of the Canadian Paralympic Equestrian Team. “They really focused and did the job they came here to do. Her biggest job was to keep her tempo consistent at the walk and she was able to make that happen.”

“Eleonore had a first class warm-up,” continued Taylor. “We were not sure if the audience would overwhelm her horse, but he stayed focused and they had some real highlights in their test.”

A strong support team has accompanied the riders and horses to England, including: Andrea Taylor (National Team Coach), Mary Longden (Assistant Team Coach), Elizabeth Quigg (Chef d’équipe), Amie O’Shaughnessy (Team Leader), Dr. Jennifer Miller (Team Veterinarian), Alice Beatty (Stable Manager), Ozzie Sawicki (Performance Consultant), Caroline Archambault (Human/Equine Massage Therapist), and Julie Cull (Media Attache).
