Canadian athletes remained consistently on the leaderboard during the eighth week of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), held March 1-4, 2018 in Wellington, FL.

On March 1, Belinda Trussell of Stouffville, ON opened the competition in the CDI 3* Grand Prix aboard her 15-year-old Westphalian gelding, Tattoo 15 (Tuareg x Ramiro’s Son). Their impressive score of 70.022% earned second place against stiff competition.

Megan Lane of Loretto, ON also produced great results in the big tour. She rode Deer Ridge Equestrian’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Zodiac MW (Rousseau x Amethist) to third place in the CDI 3* Grand Prix Special on March 3 with a score of 67.915%.

In the small tour, Tom Dvorak of Hillsburgh, ON continued to show great promise with his up-and-coming mount, Cyrus (Contucci x Cor Noir), Carla Bahr’s nine-year-old Oldenburg gelding. The duo started their run with a win on March 3 in the CDI 3* Prix St. Georges, where they were awarded 69.265% by the judges. The next day, they placed second in the CDI 3* Intermediate I with a score of 68.333%. Dvorak and Cyrus wrapped up the weekend on March 4 with another second place finish in the CDI 3* Intermediate I Freestyle, scoring 69.625%.

“Cyrus is one of the smartest horses I’ve trained,” said Dvorak. “We had a really good ride the first day, and a couple little mistakes the second and third day. Cyrus is a really keen horse, and he’s learning all the Grand Prix movements so he gets mixed up sometimes. He was being a bit of an overachiever! I was very pleased with him and really proud to be in the top three, and proud to sing the Canadian anthem on Friday.”

In her third consecutive week of AGDF success, Vanessa Creech-Terauds of Caistor Centre, ON captured first in the CDI-U25 Grand Prix Freestyle on March 4 with a score of 67.800%, riding the 18-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Devon L (De Niro 6 x Wolkenstein II), owned by Diane Creech and Louise Leatherdale. In the CDI-Y division, Creech-Terauds competed with Rob Roy (Rubin Royal x Glorieux), a 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding also owned by Creech and Leatherdale. Together, they placed second in the Team test on March 2, scoring 68.059%. Creech-Teraud’s best result with Rob Roy came in the Freestyle on March 4, when the duo earned a high mark of 70.900%.
In the CDI-P Individual, Scarlett Hansen of Bromont, QC rode her pony, 13-year-old gelding, Reve de Glatigny (Vierzen x Dornick B), to a first place finish on March 3 with 66.126%. The following day, the pair placed second in the CDI-P Freestyle with a score of 66.500%.

The AGDF 8 was also host to the Palm Beach Dressage Derby Exhibition, an annual crowd-favourite event that sees small tour athletes take on the challenge of competing aboard unfamiliar horses for top honours over multiple rounds in a knockout-style format. Riders have just five minutes to familiarize themselves with their new equine partners before heading into the ring to perform a Prix St. Georges test.

Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu of Saint-Bruno, QC represented the maple leaf in the event. In the first round she was paired with Melissa Mulchahey’s 12-year-old Westphalian gelding, Sir Velo (Sandro Bedo x Florestan I), and ultimately knocked out Juan Matute Guimon of Spain, securing her spot in the final round. In her final performance, Fraser-Beaulieu was paired with Laura Penikett’s 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Fausto (Fidertanz x Lady’s King), usually piloted by Karen Pavicic. Despite a very close competition, she was ultimately edged out by Germany’s Christophe Koschel aboard Fausto, to take second place overall.

Competition continues at the AGDF until mid-March, with the next CDI competition taking place March 15-18, 2018. For more information and results, visit http://gdf.coth.com.Top 10 Canadian Results – CDI-W Wellington (AGDF 8)
