United, Still Divided, An Update on Equine Canada and the Provinces

This summer marks the tenth anniversary of negotiations between Equine Canada and the provincial equestrian organizations toward harmonization. The term ‘harmonize’ has been an ironic expression to use in the context of what has at times looked more like a tug-of-war than an effort to create a mutually beneficial relationship. The story has outlived a number of paid and volunteer participants, and while it’s probably still some distance from being over, there is reason for optimism that EC and the provinces may yet see harmony. Four provinces and one territory – BC, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario and the Yukon – have now signed service agreements with EC for 2010, and will be renewing those contracts for 2011. The other six provinces – Alberta, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI, Quebec and Saskatchewan – have still not reached agreement with EC over terms that would be accepted by both sides, but at least they have come to the table. Read more »
